The Eye That Closed

For nine hundred years the Eye had not blinked. It kept its watch over a seam at the cold edge of Boz — a place with no name, because nothing worth naming had ever happened there. The Eye preferred it so. A good watch is a dull one.

Tonight the seam was thinning. Where being and oblivion were meant to lie apart — thin as a blade's edge, and just as final — they had begun to lean toward one another. Var toward Yok. The world toward the unmaking of it.

The Eye had felt this only once before, and it had not been alone then. It called along the dark wall to its twelve kin, the way a sentry calls down a long rampart in the night, certain of the answer.

None answered. The choice fell to the Eye alone: let the seam tear, or close it with the only substance left to spend, which was itself. It did not hesitate. The Eye gave the last of its light to the seam, and the long sight of nine hundred years guttered down to an ember, and then to nothing at all.

Far to the south, in a valley too poor to hold a name on any map, a boy woke from a dream of his own face. The hearth beside him had gone cold in the night. He struck the flint, and struck it again, and the fire would not catch.

Chapter One

Demir

Demir was awake before the rest of the house, as he was every morning, because the goats kept no calendar and observed no rest. He worked the way water works — without complaint, finding the low places, carrying whatever was given to it.

It had started the night the fire would not catch. Small things, after that. A candle that drowned in its own light. A cold that arrived from no direction and left no frost behind it. He told no one — a boy who cannot explain himself is a boy the village learns to fear.

And the dream — the same dream, louder each night. A face exactly like his own, mouthing a word he could never keep when he woke. He had begun to suspect the face was trying to reach him. He had begun, worse, to want it to —
